Muay Thai Schools in Thailand
I'm actually writing this article from my tiny, fan-only room at one of the more popular Muay Thai schools in Thailand. This is my second time here. I came here for the first time last year and before I came, I was terrified. I had originally planned to come here with a friend but at the very last minute, he backed out to stay with his girlfriend - leaving me with no choice but to come on my own as I had already paid for my ticket and quit my job.
Well, now I'm here. I've been here for about 3 and a half months this second time around and I plan on staying for another 6 months or so - perhaps even longer. I've trained in a lot of different Muay Thai schools -both good and not so good - so I have a pretty good idea as to what to look for. When you come train at the Muay Thai schools here in Thailand, here's what you should expect.
1) A good trainer to student ratio: This is the key to selecting a good Muay Thai school. From my experience, you don't want to train at Muay Thai schools that have a student-to-trainer ratio of more than 3 to 1. Any more than that and you won't be getting the personal attention that you need in order to make the improvements you're hoping for. If you want to train in a big class with limited trainers, you can always just stay in your home country. People come to the Muay Thai schools in Thailand for the personal instruction and that's what you should be looking for.
2) Thai pricing on accommodation:Our home countries are a lot more expensive than Thailand. The owners and managers of the Muay Thai schools know this and they also know that, bluntly put - you don't know any better. These Muay Thai schools often charge room rates that are double the rates that the Thai people pay for equivalent rooms in the area. So, my advice is to book only a couple nights at the camp if need be and then go out searching on your own for a room within the area.
The area of the country that you pick is also important for your overall enjoyment. The area you pick is pretty much dependant on your personality type. I'm actually in Phuket at the moment and I'm surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches. However, I have been going - and will continue to go - all around the country to train in as many Muay Thai schools as I can.
